Cancer Care - An Equitable New Model
The hub and spoke network of the southern comprehensive cancer centre
For many decades New Zealand’s public health facilities have been managed by 20 District Health Boards. Within individual districts, cancer patient numbers have not justified the development of any specialised cancer hospitals.
As well as falling short of the standard utilised by most western countries, the absence of specialised cancer hospitals counts against both the recruitment of overseas specialists and the optimum outcome for many cancer patients.
